Editorial: Balochistan Point honoured with two prestigious awards in 2017

Despite lack of resources Online Journalism has been gradually developing and introducing energetic and professional journalists with their quality contents. Balochistan Point is one of the first online newspapers in Balochistan which is working without any bias towards any race, religion or political ideology.  The volunteers of The Balochistan Point launched it to keep reporting on human rights abuse, political, social and economic issues of Balochistan. Recently, Balochistan Point has bagged two prestigious awards of Agahi Award  and Excellence in Journalism Award in country based competitions which prove the commitment and quality work of its team members.

A number of reports published in The Balochistan Point by different reporters and staff members were nominated in different categories  for Agahi Awards which were a sort great encouragement. However, Chief Editor Yousaf Ajab Baloch was recognized and awarded AGAHI for his “excellent” work in Anti-Corruption category.

The Agahi Awards are an annual series of awards for journalism in Pakistan. Media consultancy firm Mishal Pakistan organizes these awards in collaboration with leading press clubs across the country. This year, Agahi Awards had received more than 5,000 nominations from all over the country in 40 different categories from print, television, radio and online media.

It was another great achievement of Balochistan Point when its Chief Editor was awarded Excellence in Journalism Award 2017 for his reporting on Health rights with focus on access to services.   The Centre for Excellence in Journalism at the Institute of Business Administration (CEJ-IBA), Karachi and Center for Communication Programs Pakistan (CCPP) in partnership with Palladium Pakistan organized the Award for Excellence in Journalism on December 20, 2017. Twelve journalists received the awards in rights based reporting for news stories published between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 at a ceremony held at CEJ. Journalists from mainstream electronic media,  print , online  and district correspondents were awarded in categories of  Health rights with focus on access to services, Population growth & realization of human rights and  women rights with focus on reproductive health and family planning.

In fact, the awards earning of Balochistan Point is a success for all journalists in Balochistan, who have been striving to ensure truth and accuracy and become a voice of the voiceless through digital journalism. Though, online journalism is an innovative approach in field of journalism in Balochistan, however, this approach will be well promoted if the online journalists keep continue their excellent work. The awards won by Balochistan Point team member are sort of recognition of online journalists and online journalism in Balochistan for their commitment and professionalism in very limited resources.
