LAHORE: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed concern over the poor situation of Baloch people in the wake of recent earthquake and stressed the government to pay attention and provide emergency relief to them. The HRCP, in a statement issued on Friday, said casualties were higher than it was initially reported in different districts of the province, especially in Awaran where thousands of people have been rendered homeless.

HRCP called upon the Balochistan government to spare no effort to help the victims of the disaster and the federal government to immediately support the provincial government will all assistance. HRCP also expressed strong dismay over Baloch insurgents’ attempts to hamper rescue and relief operations. The organisation condemned an attack on a helicopter which carried the chief of Pakistan National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in the affected region and earnestly hoped that insurgents would desist from exploiting the stricken population’s misery and be more considerate of their humanitarian needs at this difficult time.”
